Artist Statement: My work makes use of quite basic materials, simply soft graphite & erasers. In my drawing, I began by considering that the origins of line and mark, in prehistory, were our first primitive discoveries of a visual language. So this became, in a sense, my own beginning. Line, mark, smudge were also quite primitive in my own work. As I became aware of how I made or guided these gestures on a page, I came to feel that each line and mark has its own inherent life, not linked to the hand that draws it. Out of this came imagery that has no story to tell, describes nothing, but instead evolves into a form of subconscious, preverbal experience that settles on the page. In its way, drawing is teaching me something fundamental about freedom, and the loss of fear, and of course, discovery.
