Artists Statements

Gary Aagaard (United States)

Artist Statement:

My work is the product of my environment over the last three decades. Generally, I've had a positive experience yet tend to be irked by frequent political and religious hypocrisy, general apathy (relating to war, the environment, fact-challenged pundits, etc.) and dogma of any stripe that leads to social and spiritual tunnel vision. These themes are prevalent in many of my paintings although are often explored using satire and humor as opposed to a sledge hammer (granted, I do use that on occasion, too). That said, catching the target's likeness, whether via portraiture or caricature, is often an essential element in conveying the concept.

Lyubov Biryukova (Russia)

Artist Statement:

About: Ive always experienced life through images. Since childhood i've found pleasure in expressing myself with art in hopes of sharing my feelings with other people and making emotional contact. I used to be a balerina, made fashion clothes, decorated churches with byzantine orthodox mosaics but through all my soul searching i?ve found drawing and painting to be the most powerful and meaningful ways to express myself, and so i built my life around them. Education: Stroganov Moscow State Academy of Arts and Industry (Monumental Decorative Art)

Angela Cunningham (usa)

Artist Statement:

As a painter and a sculptor in a naturalistic and realistic style, I enjoy paying close attention to precise detail, and accurately portraying things as they exist in a natural setting. My inspiration is the character and individuality of my subjects. I work from life, for I feel it's the purest way to see the intricacies of the subject's form, and the only way to interact and be inspired by the personality of the individual in front of me. Art is not only a way of observing the world and getting lost in its beauty, but it's also an interaction, an understanding, and a relationship with life itself. Every individual has something that is unique, and I'm continually fascinated to learn each of my subjects character, traits, thoughts, and quirks. I've found that no matter how different we are as individuals, there is an underlying element of commonality between us. We can all relate to art that reveals someone's contained emotions and inner thoughts, and gives us a glimpse into humanity.

Louis Grasso (US)

Artist Statement:

My self-portrait is a reverse image of me, painted from mirror. The portrait of Joseph is a painting of my father at the same age that I am in my self-portrait. A third portrait will be added later,  this one, a portrait of my grandfather, also at the same age of my father and me. Currently the two paintings serve as a diptych and once the third portrait is completed, all three will display as a triptych. The third entry is a portrait of my grandson, obviously at a much younger age than the other two portraits. These painting are all oversized, adding to their impact when displayed in person. I view portrait as a facial map to an individual's personality or character often not pretty paintings, but rather a statement of a person, somewhat of an icon, leaving the viewer with an impression of the person and not solely a copy of a face. Certainly there is a need to paint a charming face, and when commissioned I will paint to the patron's desire, but for my personal work, I choose to dig a little deeper and ask that the artwork reach much further into the individual. These paintings are somewhat impasto, almost clay-like in their final stage. The layering of paint allows me to dig even deeper into the subject. A pentimento of paint and time.

John Jaster (United States)

Artist Statement:

John works with heavy body acrylics on fairly large canvases with a lot of detail and bold colors. He calls his style "realistic impressions" because, while the overall feel of the work is definitely realism, he offsets the detail with impressionistic splashes of color. Instead of smooth blending, he likes to use puzzle pieces of color to emphasize the complex relationship of light and shadow over form. John's inspiration comes from the hidden beauty in ordinary objects.

Jason Levi (United States)

Artist Statement:

I believe in the lighting my subjects with minimal lighting following the lighting of the Caravaggio, Rembrandt, and Velazquez. To me capturing the inner self of my subject is what makes it a portrait as opposed to a picture.

Esther Lo (USA)

Artist Statement:

My art is a reflection on life and celebration of the human spirit. Like an actress living her character, I imagine myself as the subject, feeling his/her sentiments and vulnerability along the way. Using clay as primary medium, I create intriguing portraits through evocative gestures and expressions. Every change in the viewer's angle invites a different thought provoking moment that mirrors the complexity of one's inner identity. Beyond the poetry of lyrical forms is a beauty that can only be realized through the artist's own sensitivity and compassion. Such is the essence that I strive to impart in my works that bring soul to my art.

Nyle Major (New Zealand)

Artist Statement:

I am a freelance visual artist from Auckland, New Zealand. I have been actively creating, studying and exhibiting for over 9 years. I have studied locally and overseas, have had considerable experience as an artist, and as a result, have developed and promoted my practice to a conceptually sound, technically adept and highly professional practice. My practice is based upon the 19th century techniques I learned while studying in France. Coupled with a contemporary background, my work has evolved into strong and visually intense atmospheric scenes which attract the viewer to experience multiple levels of visual and conceptual detail.

Dan Pyle (United States)

Artist Statement:

I love shadows, contrast and capturing small moments in time. My work reflects what I call "detailed simplicity", by isolation the subjects and drawing them with great detail, but eliminating any distractions that might compete with the subject. This allows the viewer to create their own story and ignite their imagination.
